The more the merrier

It would appear that yet another large company is joining the OpenID bandwagon. According to them, Yahoo’s recent adoption of OpenID has quadrupled the number of OpenID users — or, at the very least, the number of OpenIDs floating around out there.

Let’s take a moment to ignore the usual, obvious questions that are raised here (”When is there going to be a big OpenID consumer?”, “How many of those users even know they have OpenIDs?”, and so on) and bask in the good news. There are more OpenID users than ever. There’s now more reason for sites to become relying parties than ever. The system is better-supported than ever. Yahoo’s going to work to make it easier than ever for sites to become reliers.

I have but one more piece of good news. And it’s good news for everyone who values their own security. Yahoo’s login is now competing, in a very real sense, side-by-side with not only AOL’s and LiveJournal’s, but with other new, stronger systems. Like myVidoop, for instance.

Let’s see if we can’t challenge the giants to beef up their login security a bit. Now that there’s even more incentive.

So, my question is this: Why use myVidoop? The $64,000 question on everyone’s mind regarding OpenID is security. You claim to be the best, but you don’t (clearly) explain why. Why should I use myVidoop over phpMyID, or simply a competing service like ClaimID or MyOpenID? The userbase of OpenID is growing rapidly, and slowly people will catch on to it better. But with portability so good, why would I switch to, or stay with, myVidoop?

    Hi Michael,

Great question! You start with, or switch to Vidoop because we make your online existence safer and more secure. I will try to explain below…

When it comes to OpenID we replace the standard single-factor username (OpenID URL) and password authorization scheme with a corporate grade two-factor authentication system that we call Vidoop Secure. This system utilizes the Vidoop image grid, which displays images from your selected secret image categories in order to draw your eye to a one-time random access code. This image-based login technology eliminates passwords and helps defend against prevalent forms of hacking, with no software to download or extra hardware to buy and carry around. We have a video explaining how Vidoop Secure works here: http://www.vidoop.com/vidoop_how.php

You stay with Vidoop because we offer a multitude of ways to further secure your identity and are continuously working to improve our member’s experience. Beyond OpenID and Vidoop Secure, all transfers are SSL secured, we offer customizable account Notifications, an Activity log, multiple personas, browser plug-ins, and more. Additional information about our myVidoop technology (including browser plug-in) and OpenID in general can be found in our help section: https://myvidoop.com/help

If you are a site operator and are considering accepting OpenID logins or becoming an OpenID provider (e.g. running phpMyID) then you would be interested in myVidoop because of our affiliate program: http://affiliates.vidoop.com/ We actually will pay you each time you refer a member to myVidoop to login and are working on many more tools that will make the myVidoop affiliate program an indispensable tool for any site operator.

Though don’t take our word for it. The great thing about OpenID is that you get to choose the provider that you trust and that has the feature set you want. We highly suggest taking the time to check out the different OpenID providers, we are sure you will find myVidoop answers the $64,000 question with some change left over :)

There is a great independent OpenID provider comparison available here: http://spreadopenid.org/provider-comparison/
